Teen Takeover accepting applications for 2013-14

APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED FOR 2013-14. CHECK BACK IN APRIL 2014 FOR THE NEXT APPLICATION PERIOD.

Calling all teenagers in York County! Interested in getting your work professionally edited, and published online and in print? Having an impact on York County and beyond? Talking with other teens about issues at school and in your neighborhoods? Or reviewing the last movie you watched?

Consider joining the York Daily Record/Sunday News Teen Takeover staff. Members are responsible for writing one to two stories a month, posting to the Teen Takeover blog and attending a monthly meeting.

Interested applicants between the ages of 14 and 17 should send the following information:

  • A cover letter stating why you are applying for the program and why you should be chosen. In addition, pitch a story idea to us: Summarize what a specific story might be about.
  • Be sure to include your full name, grade and school with the letter. Also include your phone number and email address. If you’d like to include social media information such as your Twitter handle, please do so.
  • Two samples of your writing (articles, essays, term papers or short stories)
  • Two letters of recommendation from references such as a teacher, guidance counselor, coach or neighbor (just not your parents).

Applications for 2013-14 are due May 31, 2013. If accepted, you will be invited to a July orientation.

Send your applications to teens@ydr.com, or mail them to York Daily Record, Teen Takeover c/o Matt Eyer, 1891 Loucks Road, York, PA 17408.

I was reading the requirements of being a part of the Teen Takeover staff, and I noticed that it was mandatory to attend monthly meetings. I will be going to college in the fall (for English), and I was curious if I could still be a part of it while in college. My concern is that I would not be able to attend monthly meetings when in college this fall, as my college is in Philadelphia. Is there a way to be a part of Teen Takeover and be a full-time college student at the same time?

    • Matt Eyer says:

      Hi Breanna,
Thanks for your interest. The Teen Takeover section is targeted toward teens in high school, so we actually keep the members of the program to those who are still in high school. Sometimes, college students are able to do freelance work for the York Daily Record. If you are interested in that, you may contact Kara Eberle, day metro editor, at keberle@ydr.com for further information.
      thanks,
      Matt Eyer

How many teens are going to chosen for the job this year to write for the York Daily Record?

    • Matt Eyer says:

Hi Autumn, I don’t have an exact number, but it will depend on how many teens remain with the staff, how many seniors are graduating, and how many we decide to have in the program total. I would guess it would be around 10, give or take. Thanks, Matt

  3. Rebecca Dunphy says:

I am interested in taking part of this program, but I do not know about my availability for meetings. Do you know when the meetings would be and if I am approved can I withdraw if this does not fit into my busy schedule? Thank you in advance.

  4. Autumn says:

    Hi again,
How would you contact the teens who got the job?
