A night with the York Revolution

What do you get when you take more than a dozen teenagers to a ballpark?
Photographs taken through holes in potato chips.
Efforts to rescue miniscule spiders.
An empty skybox fridge.
In an effort to get out of the office and interact a bit with the community, the York Daily Record/Sunday News Teen Takeover staff held its August meeting in a skybox at Sovereign Bank Stadium.

When the official business of the staff meeting concluded, they dispersed in discovery of all that a night at a York ball game has to offer. Of course, we asked them to write about their experiences.

ahh back 2 school:/

I do look forward every year to seeing friends and familiar faces in the halls of my school but at the same time, it's still a place where I can't completely relax. Especially this year because it's crunch time, the race is on for college application completion and tours of schools across the state.
I take mainly honors classes which looks really good on college resumes but it also takes a lot of work and dedication to complete the workload. Plus, I'm managing editor of my school paper which requires a ton of work due to my staff's obsession with perfection. I also am a staff writer for the yearbook that will be distributed next spring. Then there's teen takeover, which is a lot of fun...all in addition to regular classes.

Oh, can't forget sports...and NHS...and my job at Abercrombie. I like being involved, I really do. But it's a drag sometimes. I'm amazed that I still have time to hang with friends or go out at night. But, just one more year and I'll be finished with high school...then it's onto the big league where the rest of my life awaits. I'm ready for it, please come quick!!!

ickkk hospitals...

I don't want this entry to be a pity party but it's what I'm currently feeling so I thought I'd post a new entry.

My father has multiple sclerosis which is a neurological disease that attacks the nervous system of the human body. The disease is crippling, as it severely limits movement of any sort whether it be fingers, hands, arms or legs.

it's been a while...

I just returned from vacation with my family in the Poconos for an entire week...and I have missed not having a computer.
My longing for my laptop made me think: why do I need a computer/Myspace/Facebook when I am on vacation with my family? Seriously, how ridiculous is that?

alex britton fishes with barbie flatfish

Hey everyone. I'm Alex Peterson (my middle name is Britton, pronounced just like the country in Europe) and I attend Central York High School. If you're forgetting who I am, I was the one who waltzed in late to the first intro-meeting a few Fridays ago...yeah that's me.

I love fishing, I just got back from Canada two days ago with my family and one of my best friends. We caught over 400 fish in 6 days, it was awesome. I love being outside and just being in the wilderness I guess you can call it.

I also love traveling, going anywhere and everywhere. I traveled to Europe twice, once in 2000 and once in 2005. I visited England and France with friends and family. It was an experience of a lifetime and I plan to go back someday soon.

My dream job would be ...

What you want to do with your life?

When you're a teenager, the question seems to pop up everywhere. It affects the courses you choose in high school, the activities you participate in, and the people you spend time with.

As graduation nears, the urgency for an answer seems to intensify. You want to choose a college with a good program in your chosen major. Of course, that requires first knowing what you'd like to major in.

With so many factors to consider - pay, status, interests, required skills and certifications - it can be tough to know exactly what type of job or career would be the best fit.

But that can't keep a teen from dreaming, right?

We asked members of the York Daily Record/Sunday News' Teen Takeover staff to tell us what their dream job would be and why. Check out what they had to say, below, and then do a little dreaming of your own.

Tales from the cafeteria

It’s hard to get a high-school diploma without experiencing the kind of education you can only get from time spent in the school cafeteria.

You learn basic principles such as: If you can’t identify it, don’t eat it. A packed lunch is always better when some of its components have been traded with friends. Where you sit often says something about you.

Some things change over time. Nutritional fads and programs influence the offerings. Increasing enrollment and scheduling issues might have you eating lunch at 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. Brown bags and metal lunch boxes give way to fashionable, temperature-controlled sacks.

Other things, however, seem to withstand the test of time. The cafeteria has always been a key setting for the social dramas of school life to play out. And the chicken pattie that the lunch lady plops on your plate probably isn’t all that different than the one your mother ate when she was in school.

Below, we asked members of the York Daily Record/Sunday News Teen Takeover staff to share some of their best tales from the cafeteria.

Hopefully, it will make you nostalgic for pizza day, not the food fights.

Essentials for the next generation -- Teens share what they can’t live without

It seems like every day we discover a new technology or gizmo we just can’t live without.

It’s not a new phenomenon.

Throughout history, the advent of the automobile, the washing machine or the television made people wonder how they ever got along without such luxuries/necessities. These days, depending on who you talk to, the list of essentials might include anything from an MP3 player or GPS navigation system to the Internet and text messaging.

We asked members of the York Daily Record/Sunday News’ Teen Takeover staff to tell us what they felt they couldn’t live without and why. We thought it might offer some insight into essentials for a new generation.

The results were a bit surprising.

While the responses do include a laptop and a fancy coffee drink, many more of the answers are decidedly low-tech: a journal, music, chewing gum.

Who knows? Maybe it means that the more high-tech our society becomes, the more we long for simple pleasures.
