Byrnes Health Center Celebrates 15 Years of Health Education

| | Comments (0)

Whether it's dissecting a sheep's heart at a summer camp, touching a giant, interactive tongue during a birthday party, or awkwardly taking an elementary school field trip to learn about the forbidden topic of puberty, the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center holds tons of memories for York County kids.

The Center will celebrate 15 years of successful health education this month. Several activities and events have been planned for this year, ranging from participating in the Pennsylvania Farm Show to making a giant bowl of fruits and vegetables as a float for the St. Patrick's Day parade.

The Center is also planning to upgrade the exhibits in the Nutrition and Fitness Teaching Theater and has started a new Web site called www.LearnToBeHealthy.org to encourage children and adults to make healthy choices.

Greatest Band of All Time

| | Comments (1)

Arguably one of the most influential bands of its time, Coldplay continues to awe fans across the globe with its distinctive rhythms and powerful lyrics. The band consists of vocalist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion.
Today the members fondly look back on the band's 1997 genesis when Martin and Buckland congregated in London's Covent Gardens to play Beatles' tunes. However, the jam ended with a police escort.
Despite the setback, the band performed its first gig on January 16, 1998 with the panicked, last-minute name Starfish. One month later, the members played their first concert as Coldplay. In May of the same year, they released the EP Safety. It contained a stunning three tracks.
The band's defining moment arrived in 2000 with the hit song "Yellow," which debuted along with their first album Parachutes. With millions of copies selling, the band progressed to A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005), and finally their current album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), the latter of which won the band three Grammies.
Today, the band has sold over 50 million albums, which include other hit tracks such as "Clocks," "Speed of Sound," and "Violet Hill." The members continue to write lyrics, strum guitars, and hum tunes. While concocting their next album, they participate in and endorse charitable projects. Perhaps the members' original homage to the legendary Beatles forecasts their own eternal celebrity.

And I Predict...

With such a dramatic episode last night and only five episodes left until the Season Finale, I believe it's time to start predicting the future and reviewing the past of our dear Desperate Housewives.

Going to States

To most people Cross Country is a really dumb sport where people just run around in circles. Those people are wrong. Cross Country takes a lot of guts and hard work. Believe it or not, running (that's what cross country is) is very competitive. That is why I am very proud of the Central York Girls Cross Country Team for qualifying for states!

Music Inspires Patriotism

| | Comments (0)

I'm not a flag-toting, anthem-singing, Army-joining patriot.

So when I feel truly proud to be an American, it's news.

A few months ago, I took part in an international music festival called "Vivace!" at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music in Lancaster.

The first evening I was there, the American Wind Symphony Orchestra (AWSO), emphasis on American, was playing in the academy's concert hall.

As I listened to AWSO perform its repertoire, I realized the orchestra depicted America beautifully and accurately.

There were wacky characters (the 81-year-old director wore a loud paisley sports jacket), international flavors (the young professional musicians hailed from all over the world - Venezuela, England and Japan, among others) and a backdrop of remarkable music that set up an amazing concert.

The professional acoustics of the academy's concert hall didn't hurt either. When a Japanese piece called for an Odaiko drum - a monstrous drum that symbolizes Japanese warlords - it pounded, echoing in my chest. When a flute's solo reached its lofty high notes, I felt it tingling in my toes.

Hearing AWSO made me want to capture every moment on a movie reel so I could replay it in my mind whenever I wanted. When the orchestra played a medley of tunes from "The Sound of Music," the experience was so breathtaking it was almost sad, knowing I would never be able to hear anything quite as beautiful again.

But how did that make me proud to be an American? I guess I realized that being capable of being that happy when listening to a representation of a country, even if it was just for an hour or two, was a feat worth appreciating.

A guest instructor at the festival later told me that certain types of music are like water or wind in color and mood.

In retrospect, I believe he was right. When AWSO mixed the fluid elements of sparkling, rushing water and whispering, meandering wind, the result was magic.

Since the late ’60s, when games for Unix started to appear, there have been LAN (local-area network) parties all over the world.

All Time Low
“So Wrong, It’s Right”
3.5 out of 5

The Lutherville/Timonium pop punk quartet has delivered their highly anticipated new album. As one of the top artists on MySpace and becoming a break out band, All Time Low brings a fantastic energetic pop punk collection. Musically, the band shows off their talent on this album. With an abundance of catchy guitar riffs, signature nasally vocals, and clever lyrics, “So Wrong, It’s Right” is clearly the band’s best effort to date.

Hoho's Music Worth Your Time

"So much music, so little time." With so many artists around, it is hard to pick out the good ones. Someone who everyone needs to watch out for is an acoustic/folk-rock artist from Mifflintown by the name of Nathaniel Hoho. He is becoming a local favorite in York and neighboring counties.

Well as i hope most of york county knows (which i know they don't), 42 for Shnozz is performing at Club 19 this Friday Night at 6:30. Now most teens are going to either be working or going to football games but WHY????!!!?! Come to the show and you will get free stuff but I am not telling what. You are going to have to find out for yourself. Ok so nothing is going to be free but regardless, you, your best friend, your family, your neighbors, your enemies and of course the creepy lunch lady at your school should come see "God's Gift to Humanity" 42 FOR SHNOZZ

CLUB 19

1327 North Duke Street in York PA 17404

To help promote the show, a new song each day will be posted RIGHT HERE!!!! All the songs are copyrighted so you can't steal them or we will glady sue you!!! haha. enjoy the inspirational words...
1st SONG: GAZELLE

Vocals: Victor Martinez (aka: Alex Bishop, Senior at York Catholic High School. Full disclosure: Alex Bishop is a new member of the Teen Takeover staff.)
Lead Guitar: Tone (aka: Anthony Holbert, Senior at Northeastern High School)
Bass: Noah Thompson (aka: Nick Lenz, Senior at York Catholic High School)
Piano: Chaz Warning (aka: Scott Holtzapple, Junior at Northeastern High School)
Drums: Woodrow Duffy (aka: Dave Smith, Air Force Reserve)

One of the most chaotic and, somehow, strangely amusing bands from the York music scene is 42 for Shnozz, and the name 42 for Shnozz sparks curiosity. The band played their first live show Sunday at the Liberty Fire Hall with many more experienced bands, such as Hit Or Miss, Safari So Good, Sandlot Heroes, Rosematter, Ramah, The Hanslick Rebellion and The Domino Theory.

A Fresh Look at 27 Lights

27lights3.jpg

You may remember hearing about 27 Lights - the local band with a few years of experience, a recording contract with Rock Hollow Records and a new self-titled album. Maybe you heard about the band and its members through school (they've amounted a few trophies from school band contests). Maybe you visited their MySpace page when you were bored. No matter how little or how much you know about 27 Lights, you still have a lot to learn.

Jake's Band.jpg

What is the best part about being a member of a teenage rock band? In an e-mail interview, Central York High School junior Jake Hammill said that it's "having an excuse to be out past curfew, the girls, and all the cool people that make up the York music scene."

Library seeks teen advisors

| | Comments (0)

By LEAH SPANGLER
William Penn Senior High School

Usually, libraries are a pretty lackluster place for teens to hang out. You rarely see a group of teens just playing games, eating or talking.

At Martin Memorial Library in downtown York, however, this type of situation happens at least once a month, and it’s all thanks to a group of teens know as the Teen Advisory Board (TAB).

This group is composed of about 20 teenagers who meet 7 to 8:30 p.m. every other Wednesday in the library’s community room. They plan events for students ages 8 to 12 and 13 to 18, and discuss how the library can help them with their events. They also write an e-zine called The Slant, which can be viewed by anyone online.

TAB is always looking for members. Any teen can join as long as they complete a few simple requirements. They must volunteer at the library for a least 10 hours a month, write one Slant article every month and attend all meetings.

Remember, anyone can volunteer at the library or write an article for The Slant at any time without being on the staff.

The Slant, more information on TAB and a list of upcoming events can be found at http://www.yorklibraries.org/teens/slant.htm.
