Navy Beats Notre Dame

| | Comments (1)

As the son of two Naval Academy graduates, I always cheer for Navy football. Every year we watch the Army-Navy game and cheer for Navy to win.

Even though Navy is not the biggest team, their heart makes up for their lack of size. It's like cheering for a whole team of players like Rudy. They put everything into the game even though their opponents are almost twice their size.

Navy has been playing Notre Dame ever since Navy helped Notre Dame financially by sending men to train at Notre Dame during World War II. Notre Dame usually wins these games and that is not surprising because Notre Dame has money and can recruit players that are taller and heavier than Navy's players can be because of size restrictions. However, even with these advantages, Notre Dame still loses to Navy occasionally.

Last Saturday, Navy beat Notre Dame, ranked 19th, for the second time in three years.
Notre Dame's loss to Navy was bad for Notre Dame. They were planning on a BCS bowl and a 10 win season. Jimmy Clausen, who is in the running for the Heisman Trophy, was repeatedly stopped at the Navy end zone, was sacked in the Notre Dame end zone for a Navy safety, and was penalized 15 yards for shoving the Navy player after throwing an interception.

The game was very exciting and I hope it helps Navy get ranked before the end of the season.

Warriors soccer hope for repeat of last season

| | Comments (0)

The Susquehannock Warriors boys' soccer team heads into the 2009 season looking to repeat after last year's AA state championship season, but this year it will try to do it without the help of many departing seniors and with the challenge of having a new coach, Will Whitty.

Whitty, 29, coached club teams at FC York for the past three years and was an assistant coach for the Warriors last season. As the new head coach for last year's state champions, Whitty said he is ready for the challenge.

"It's an honor and definitely a little nerve-racking," Whitty said. "There are big expectations, especially with another talented group coming through. It's definitely a challenge. But with playing soccer and being competitive, you always like challenges."

The Warriors have already started quickly with a record of 5-2. Hopes are that this season will land them back in Hersheypark Stadium, playing in another state championship game.

Brett Favre coming back . . . AGAIN???

| | Comments (0)

Brett Favre is back playing football again; this time not with the Packers, nor the Jets, but with his ex-division rival the Minnesota Vikings.

Is this all that surprising? Not really, given his repetitive -and rather notorious--history of finishing the year crying at press conferences, announcing his retirement and then quickly returning to the game, expecting teams to take him back.

And sure enough, teams lacking a quality quarterback are more than happy to have the legendary future Hall of Famer quarterbacking their team, in hopes that he can help bring them a Super Bowl.

This is what the Vikings hope Favre will do this year. But this is also what the Jets thought Favre would do last year and the team finished the year missing the playoffs, with a locker-room in disarray, and with the Head Coach Eric Mangini being fired.

It was quite a tragic season for the Jets, and so far the outlook for the Vikings seems to be about the same, if not worse, as the team is already embroiled in controversy with Favre joining the team late.

Of course, this possible tragedy could turn into something great if Favre is good enough to take this already talented Vikings team, lead by star running back Adrian Peterson, to the next level, which would mean winning at least one playoff game, reaching the NFC title game, or perhaps even reaching and maybe even winning a Super Bowl.

But do I think that this will pan out this way? No.

Favre is simply a washed up quarterback who has played way past his prime.

His body cannot take the pounding of a 16 game season and his ability does not enable him to make the same kind of amazing plays that he once was able to do.

Frankly, if anything, it should be insulting to Packer fans, who have loved him his entire career, to see him playing with their division rival.

Some even suggested that Favre is playing with the Vikings in order to get back at his former team, but I do not believe that. I think he is just someone who does not know how to quit the sport he loves.

Whatever his intentions, this story has grown tedious and boring.

Most likely Favre will have another unsuccessful season. He will retire and return again, forcing us to endure another off-season of meaningless drama.

Yankees vs Redsox

Starting tonight and lasting till Sunday, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will face off in a pivotal 4 game series in Yankee stadium.

This year the Yankees are 0-8 against the Red-sox and come in looking for their first win against them in this entire season, although they currently lead the Red-sox in the division. As a die-hard Yankees fan, this is frankly pretty embarassing.

Hopefully they can right the ship tonight by beating the Red-sox for the first time this season.

Le Tour de France

| | Comments (0)

The Tour de France is back and this year's race looks like its going to be a good one. Now, cycling does not seem to be a very exciting sport, but the Tour de France has it all. With amazing teamwork and camaraderie among the racers, drug scandals that shock the world, racers like Big Thor Hushovd, nicknamed "The God of Thunder," Fabian Cancellara, "The Bear from Bern," Mark Cavendish, "The Man" from the Isle of Man, Big George Hincapie, who has competed in the Tour de France many times, and Tour winners Alberto Contador and Carlos Sastre, and, of course, Lance Armstrong's return from retirement to race once again in the Tour de France, how can you not watch the 2009 Tour de France?

The winner of the Tour de France is determined by the rider's time at the end of each stage. At the end of each stage, the rider with the best overall time is given the Yellow Jersey. The rider with the best overall time at the end of all of the stages is given the final yellow Jersey and is crowned the winner of that year's Tour de France.

This year's Tour has gotten off to a great start in Monaco when Fabian Cancellara crushed the competition to take the first Yellow Jersey. Cancellara has kept the Yellow Jersey even though he is now in a dead heat with Lance Armstrong.

Today's stage in Spain was marred by the rain that caused numerous crashes throughout the race. But it was the thunder that accompanied the rain that foretold the victory of The God of Thunder. Thor Hushovd struck at the sprint to the finish and won the day's stage.

The Tour de France is still anyone's to win. Anything could happen in the race and that's what makes it so interesting. With so many possible outcomes, the 2009 Tour de France is shaping up to be a very exciting and competitive cycling race.

Anxious, I pick up the phone to dial Allee Ilgenfritz's number.

"Hello?" Allee answers.

Hey Allee, it's Alicia Miller from Teen Takeover. Are you ready for your interview? I ask.

"I sure am!" She replies. I could hear the excitement in her voice.GW649H947.jpg

Going to States

To most people Cross Country is a really dumb sport where people just run around in circles. Those people are wrong. Cross Country takes a lot of guts and hard work. Believe it or not, running (that's what cross country is) is very competitive. That is why I am very proud of the Central York Girls Cross Country Team for qualifying for states!
