Cheddar cheese: The best for sharp snacking

Cheddar cheese.

Its versatility has made it a staple of entertaining. It can be eaten plain, cubed and served with crackers, paired with wine, melted onto appetizers, mixed into dips . . . well, you get the picture.

With so many varieties in the dairy case, sometimes it’s hard to know if you’re choosing a true crowd-pleaser.

Chocolate ice cream: The best to chill your summer

By JENNIFER VOGELSONG, Daily Record/Sunday News

When the temperature starts to rise, cravings kick in for something cool and creamy.
Although vanilla still holds the top spot when it comes to favorite ice-cream flavors, chocolate isn’t far behind.

"But it's nasty, mommy..."

I guess sickness is just going around - my family's been sick since last week.

My dad bought a box of Cold-Eeze brand lozenges - cough-drop like drops that are supposed to shorten colds and give some relief.

I have a drop with me: The wrapper says it's cherry flavor.

It must mean "cherry tree". It tastes like a plank.

And the box says you're supposed to suck on them, not chew them.

Graham crackers: The best for snacking or s'mores

By JENNIFER VOGELSONG, Daily Record/Sunday News

The Keebler Elves don’t do a bad job with graham crackers, but in this month’s blind taste test, the York Daily Record/Sunday News Teen Takeover staff voted Honey Maid the best of the crunchy bunch.

Generic store brand? Don’t even bother, they advise.

Barbecue chips: In search of a killer chip

By JENNIFER VOGELSONG, Daily Record/Sunday News

Barbecue potato chips are a particular favorite among savory snack lovers. Maybe it’s the pull of the orange-colored powder. The sensory jolt of spice hitting saliva. The kick, the crunch, the lingering salty aftertaste.

Whatever it is, when done well, it’s addictive. When it’s not, well, it’s just disappointing.

This month, members of the York Daily Record/Sunday News Teen Takeover staff put four popular brands of barbecue potato chips to the test.

The results indicated that Lay’s KC Masterpiece brand is indeed a masterpiece.

Judging from the teens’ comments, it seems you have to consider a few factors when choosing a chip. Is crunch and crispness the most important thing? Or is it the flavor? The texture? In the case of barbecue chips, should the spice be knock-the-bag-out-of-your-hands strong or pleasantly mild?

Check out their reviews, below. Then, go forth, and choose your chip.

Tomato soup: Campbell’s comes out on top

By JENNIFER VOGELSONG, Daily Record/Sunday News

When the weather turns cold, cravings for comfort foods kick in. You find yourself yearning for dishes that warm both the mind and belly.

A big bowl of soup is one of the best ways to turn up the temperature and take you back to simpler times. And nothing says classic like Campbell’s tomato soup. Well, at least according to four members of the York Daily Record/Sunday News’ Teen Takeover staff.

After a blind sampling of five mainstream brands, the can of Campbell’s condensed tomato soup came out on top. They praised its creamy texture and bold flavor. Still, they weren’t quite ready to sing in a Campbell’s commercial.

Check out the teens’ comments — along with reviews of competing brands — in this month’s taste test. Then head to your local supermarket and stock up for the chilly days ahead.

Send your favorite crumbled crackers swimming in its scarlet pool, or use for dunking grilled-cheese sandwiches.

However you decide to enjoy it, just don’t forget to add water (or milk).

Girl Scout Cookies still pack flavor

By JENNIFER VOGELSONG, Daily Record/Sunday News

This year, the Girl Scouts are giving everyone something new to talk about.

No — we don’t mean how many minutes it takes to suck down a box of Thin Mints.

The big news in Girl Scout cookies this year isn’t a new cookie or new cookie name.

It’s more about what’s not there — as in no more trans fats.

Yep, the Girl Scouts are at the forefront of the movement to make Americans healthier. Well, as much as a bunch of cookie-pushers can.

What we wanted to know — and what we’re sure you want to know before plunking down $3.50 for a box — is do they still taste good?

So the teens who write for the York Daily Record/Sunday News’ Teen Takeover page stepped up to the plate. If anyone could detect taste changes, it would be this bunch of unforgiving critics.

True to form, the teens found whatever faults there are to be found with Girl Scout cookies. But they also found plenty of good things to say about them.

To check out a sampling of their comments, read on.
