Brianne Good

| | Comments (0)

Brianne Good, 16, is a home-schooled high school junior, who spends much of her spare time involved in theater activities. She is most involved at DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre, but she has done some touring shows with York Little Theatre.

Her favorite thing to do is act. In 10 years, she has been in 24 plays. One of the main reasons she enjoys the theater is because she gets to be with people.

"I enjoy interacting with people who are all working for one common goal," she said.

The place she likes the most in the theater is the green room because, "I get to spend time with my friends there relaxing before a show."

But Brianne isn't just an actor; she does just about everything that needs to be done at the theater, from her favorite crew position (lights) to being production stage manager to being on the Membership Volunteer and Special events committee.

"(On the MVS committee) I calculate all the volunteer hours for the organization. We compile information on teens, and what teens want. We schedule all events at DreamWrights that aren't shows."

She is also one of the teen representatives on the DreamWrights board. They plan teen special events such as the teen movie nights.

"I try to keep the interest of all members in mind when bringing ideas to the board," she said. "I enjoy it because I get to help DreamWrights try to continue to grow as an organization. "

Brianne has taught numerous DreamWrights Creativity Camps, which are theater camps for young children.

"I enjoy working with kids, and I think it's important for kids to learn about theater," she said. "I (continue to teach the camps because I) want to be a teacher when I finish college, and I think it's good practice and a very important program."

She said every school year, she spends about 300 hours at the theater, even though she doesn't see herself pursuing acting in the future.

"While I do enjoy theater, I don't enjoy it enough to do it as my career," she said. When asked about who should get involved in theater, she promptly answered, "Everyone."

Tori Gohn

If you asked Tori Gohn what she focused the most on of her activities, she would tell you sports.

But then again academics is very important. And you can't forget that she's an actress. And she also likes art. Tori is an extremely well-rounded teenager who hopes to help the world some day.

Like most female teens, Tori has many friends and likes spending time with them. She spends her free moments listening to pop music, and she also likes to text.

This 13-year-old balances a diverse schedule.

Tanner Gerace

| | Comments (0)

Tanner Gerace, a freshman at West York Area High School, was born January 21, 1995. His heroes are Mr Eisenhart, from West York Area Middle School, and Mikey Powell, a famous lacrosse player. If he had to be put in a place with one peson, it would be with Powell on a lacrosse field. He sees himself playing lacrosse in the future, and wants to attend college at Syracuse University.

Tanner's favorite sport happens to be lacrosse, and he also plays football. He became interested in lacrosse when he saw people playing on a field and decided it might be fun and has been playing the sport since he was in sixth grade. If he were to tell someone who just started to play lacrosse something he advise them "not to get mad if you drop the ball."

Lacrosse is a game where you must keep the ball in the stick and run to the opposite goal to score. There are several differences between girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse. There is more physical contact in boys lacrosse, and they also use helments and cradle with one hand. What I'm trying to say is that the boys are a lot more dangerous than the girls.

Student has passion for filmmaking

Daniel Gay
Junior, Christian School of York

How did you become interested in films/movie production?I started playing around with movie programs and started posting movies on YouTube. I decided that I might want to try that for a career, so I went to a film camp at UCLA.

What was it like to attend the film camp at UCLA?
I didn't know what to expect. Mainly it just gave you the experience of what it would be like to study in college. Classwise, we took things on movie history and genre and how to get your story across in different genres. I built pretty good relationships with the professors, and I still contact my professors and they help me out with questions I have about the industry or college.

The luxury of being a senior

| | Comments (0)

For all you high school haters out there, never fear, it gets better.

Despite the constant talk of college and the dreaded SAT, as a senior this year I have many freedoms; and if you take the right steps, you will too. I've got a press pass for newspaper (which includes free entry to football games), a senior aide pass, and a priveldge pass for NHS. Oh, and my classes end at 12:00 because I take a course at Penn State twice a week, so my afternoons are free. Basically, I can do what I want, when I want. (Well, besides skip class, but who would ever want to do that? hem hem) Anyway, so basically, if high school is giving you a hard time, just wait it out, it gets much better.

alex britton fishes with barbie flatfish

| | Comments (0)

Hey everyone. I'm Alex Peterson (my middle name is Britton, pronounced just like the country in Europe) and I attend Central York High School. If you're forgetting who I am, I was the one who waltzed in late to the first intro-meeting a few Fridays ago...yeah that's me.

I love fishing, I just got back from Canada two days ago with my family and one of my best friends. We caught over 400 fish in 6 days, it was awesome. I love being outside and just being in the wilderness I guess you can call it.

I also love traveling, going anywhere and everywhere. I traveled to Europe twice, once in 2000 and once in 2005. I visited England and France with friends and family. It was an experience of a lifetime and I plan to go back someday soon.

Being a Muslim Teen in America

| | Comments (3)

It was supposed to be a simple trip to the mall. It was just her and her family, walking amongst the other everyday Americans who roam the tiled floors and glance at the stone-faced mannequins.

Unfortunately, fourth grader Mariam El-Maghrabi caught sight of something unexpected and shocking.

She stared at a man dressed in a shirt that portrayed a scope of a gun over the head of a woman dressed in a hijab, a Muslim head covering. On the shirt, it clearly stated: All Muslims Must Die.

Teen pens novels in November

| | Comments (1)

Amy Myers>, junior, York Suburban Senior High School

How did you get involved with National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)?

I found the Web site (one) December, so I had to wait until the next (November). And then I did it. I convinced a few friends to join with me, with varying degrees of success.

Explain the process of National Novel Writing Month.

It's like an honor system because you can sign up on the Web site (www.nanowrimo.org) and once you've written your 50,000 words you earn a certificate. In a month, you have a novel. I print them out. I like to bring it down to about 3,000 words a day so it gives me time off if I need it but it never works out that way. I try to take breaks so I don't become a recluse.

By MICHELLE RENN
West York Area High School

X00058_9.jpeg

Name: Kristen Hill

Grade: Senior

School: West York Area High School

What are you most known for?

My love of music and being really involved with it.

What instruments do you play?

I’ve played flute for nine years, piccolo for seven, piano for four, oboe for three, and bass drum and bass guitar for two years.

Which instrument is your favorite?

The flute. I’ve been playing it for the longest.

Do you take any musical lessons?

Oh yes — I have lessons for flute and piccolo, piano, oboe and bass. I have lessons three nights a week.

What types of musical groups are you a part of?

I am in West York’s marching and symphonic band, jazz band, brass ensemble, York Youth Symphony Orchestra and district band. I was also in district band as a junior.

What other musical activities have you taken part in?

Last summer I went on a European concert tour with the Youth Music Abroad program. Also last summer, I took Louis Moyse and Jonathan Snowden master classes. I was also chosen to participate in York’s Youth Talent Night through the Abendmusik program this past November.

Why are you so involved with music?

I think it is a lot of fun. When I’m playing in an ensemble and I hear a really cool part for another instrument, it makes me want to play that and I end up running home asking my parents to buy me another instrument and lessons.

What are your future plans?
To go to college and become a music teacher and performer.
