Tennis is a great way for youth athletes to start building character and being a good sport. Players who learn positive sportsmanship tend to excel in other aspects of their lives when older. Just signing your child up for a tennis class, league, or team won’t automatically make them become good sports. It’s a joint effort from parents, coaches, and teachers to explain and emphasis good sportsmanship. Teaching young tennis players to always try their hardest, play by the rules, not to complain when losing, not to brag or boast when winning, and treat everyone with respect is one of the best character traits to instill in youth athletes. Having regular conversations with youth athletes about being a good sport and when an opportunity presents itself discussing events that took place during practice or during a match. Youth athletes need guidance and will benefit greatly if taught how to be a good sport.
