This week, in a novel twist, I'll boldly predict the Saturday afternoon games, too. (And if I might have a "When I was a kid..." moment, I'd like to say that we need to have more Saturday afternoon games. Once everyone got stadium lights, the schedule became swamped with Friday night games, and the Saturday afternoon action pretty much dried up. But I'm nostalgic for those Saturday afternoon games on sunny, crisp autumn afternoon...)
The picks:
York Suburban over Dover. But I'm told that Dover has the Must-See Band this fall. So this game might be the best bang for your overall entertainment dollar.
West York over Kennard-Dale. Yes, I got burned picking against the Rams last week. And, no, I'm not terribly confident about this pick. But I'm going with my gut.
Last week, I went 7-3 in predicting the Friday night football games, which, in my book, is not a very good job. I failed to pick Red Lion, Dallastown and Kennard-Dale, all three of which scored impressive road victories.
Here are my picks for Friday, Sept. 30:
The Baseball Stadium That Doesn't Yet Exist in York now has a Brooks Robinson Plaza, according to a news release we received this afternoon from Keystone Baseball:
Maybe Fairfield's football team can go home again.
Former Central York High School standout Jason Zeigler is having a dandy football season at Mansfield University.
Last weekend against Kutztown University, the senior linebacker recorded 11 tackles and forced a fumble in a 45-18 loss.
Zeigler is majoring in criminal justice.
Troy Goodling of Seven Valleys, who died Saturday in a hunting accident, was an avid local softball player for two decades. He will be honored around 6:30 or 7 p.m. tonight at Field 3 of the Bob Hoffman complex. Local softball teams and players have been invited to participate.
"Hunting and softball were his two great loves," said Ed Bowman. "This is going to be an emotional night."
In 2001, York Daily Record sportswriter Chrissi Pruitt-Jennings wrote a series of in-depth articles on Spring Grove High School student-athlete Natalie Goodfellow, who tore the ACL in her left knee and went through a grueling surgery and rehabilitation.
Watching the Steelers/Patriots game, it occurs to me that this could be a golden opportunity for NFL Films. They could use the highlights from this game to create a new DVD: "The NFL's 10 Greatest Missed Tackles."
Ugly football. And this was supposed to be the NFL's marquee game in September?
That was Northwestern that the Nittany Lions just beat, folks.
Don't get too excited yet.
Up next: A real opponent. If the Lions can beat Minnesota next week, then the hopes for a 6-5 season and a Music City Bowl appearance are very much alive.
Late in the first half, Penn State is trailing Northwestern, 23-7. It's just the same old song for the Nittany Lions. A team that looks utterly unprepared. Turnovers. Sloppy play. Penalties.
If the Lions can't rally to win this game, they're looking at no better than 5-6 this season.
And can we just declare the Michael Robinson Quarterbacking Era over now, please?
Well, I think we all saw this coming a mile away...
When Palmeiro made his major-league debut with the Cubbies in 1986, his teammates included Ryne Sandberg, Gary Matthews, Ron Cey, Lee Smith and Terry Francona. Some trivia: Assuming that Palmeiro's career is over (and it should be), the only members of the 1986 Cubs who are still active are Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer.
Most of the Daily Record/Sunday News sports staff members -- quite wisely -- aren't interested in make public predictions about high school football games.
But I've never minded making a fool of myself in public (which would explain my karaoke addiction), so here are my picks for tonight's area games...
This story just keeps getting stranger and stranger...
From The Associated Press:
NEW YORK — Rafael Palmeiro told baseball's arbitration panel that a vitamin he received from Baltimore Orioles teammate Miguel Tejada might have caused his positive test for steroid use.
Palmeiro testified that he received B-12 from Tejada, a person familiar with the grievance hearing said Thursday on condition of anonymity because the proceedings were secret.
"Right now I'm in shock," Tejada, a former American League MVP, said after Baltimore lost to the New York Yankees on Thursday night. "I’ve never given anybody steroids before. I’ve been checked out three times already, and I’m clean. I’ve been clean all my life."
"It doesn’t bother me because I’m not guilty. I’ve done nothing wrong. I just gave him B-12, and B-12 is legal," Tejada said. "You don’t get caught for B-12."
The sad tale of Baltimore Oriole Rafael Palmeiro continues.
ESPN, citing The Baltimore Sun, is reporting here that Palmeiro implicated one of his Oriole teammates when appealing his Major League Baseball steroid suspension.
I'm guessing that Palmeiro, who is still in a whole lot of hot water with Congress, has already seen his last at-bat in the majors.
And despite these numbers, I'm not sold that he belongs in the Hall of Fame.
Tisen Dickson’s sprained right ankle has healed enough for him to take about 85 percent of the snaps Saturday for William Penn against Pius X, Bearcats' coach Matt Ortega said.
With league play starting Friday in YAIAA football, Central York coach Brad Livingston likes the way his undefeated team is playing.
With only 11 games left in the regular season, the Philadelphia Phillies have what is essentially a must-win game in Atlanta tonight.
Most of the YAIAA football teams will be entering divisional play this Friday. Now that we've had a chance to see the teams play three games, we can assess which teams might be the strongest contenders for YAIAA crowns this fall.
Kennard-Dale graduate Tony Ruth had a pair of rushing touchdowns in Bloomsburg University's 63-0 win over Lock Haven in college football action on Saturday afternoon. Ruth was part of an amazing offensive attack that rushed 62 times for 372 yards.

William Penn football coach Matt Ortega said starting quarterback Tisen Dickson is still recovering from the sprained ankle he suffered last week against J.P. McCaskey. Running back Shavell Jones will start against Pennsbury Friday night.
