With only 11 games left in the regular season, the Philadelphia Phillies have what is essentially a must-win game in Atlanta tonight.
The Phillies trail Houston by two games in the National League wild-card hunt. And they have nobody to blame but themselves for that deficit, as they have posted an 0-6 record against the Astros this season.
The have been some promising signs for the Phillies this season, with the emergence of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.
But it will be hard to consider this season anything but a failure if the Phillies miss the playoffs. This team, with its payroll well over $90 million, should be in the playoffs. And the season-ending injury to Jim Thome isn't enough of an excuse.
If the Phillies don't make a run in their final 11 games and get into the playoffs, expect fans to continue their clamoring for the ouster of general manager Ed Wade.
If fact, this Web site is a great example of fans' passion about the Phillies and frustration at continued failures by a franchise that hasn't been to the postseason since 1993.
