Most of the YAIAA football teams will be entering divisional play this Friday. Now that we've had a chance to see the teams play three games, we can assess which teams might be the strongest contenders for YAIAA crowns this fall.
Reporter Jeff Frantz will have a full story on the topic of the YAIAA football races in Friday's York Daily Record. But, for now, here's my opinion on the most intriguing games this Friday:
Central York at South Western: The Panthers are 3-0 and the Mustangs are 0-3, but South Western almost always finds a way to make itself a factor in YAIAA Division I, and it wouldn't be surprise to see it win this one. Meanwhile, this will be a great test of the Panthers' true talent level. Win this one, and they could be heading for a very special season.
Hanover at Delone Catholic: It's always a gritty, down-in-the-trenches war between these two programs. Neither team can be considered the favorite in Division III (that goes to Littlestown or Bermudian Springs), but the winner between the Squires and Nighthawks could build some nice momentum to make a dark-horse run in the division.
West York at Susquehannock: The Warriors did everything that was asked of them in the first three non-conference games, posting a 3-0 record. Now, with a clear path to the Division II crown (although Suburban will have something to say about that) and a possible District 3 playoff berth, there will be a lot of pressure on Susquehannock not to stumble as week-in, week-out favorites. West York is a decided underdog against the Warriors, but don't be surprised if they put a little scare into Susquehannock.
