7:51 p.m.: That 3-and-out on defense was exactly was Penn State needed to keep the crowd energized as the No. 1 factor in this game.
7:54 p.m.: As Penn State goes 3-and-out, too, some thoughts from Daily Record/Sunday News staff writer Jim Seip:
STATE COLLEGE -- The hundred or so tents outside Beaver Stadiums Gate A had been cleared away, replaced by thousands of students -- each one clad in white. They faced a steel gate, and stood cheering for a team they couldnt see.It was more than three hours before kickoff.
Crushed cans of Yuengling and an empty bottle of vodka -- the low-grade stuff -- had been tossed to the side. The cheering students needed little positive reinforcement, but assistant coach Mike McQueary provided it, appearing on a stairwell above the raucous crowd, pumping his fist. A high school recruit at his side grinned when the crowd chanted: "Play for us, play for us."
This is how Penn State celebrates its return to Big Ten relevance.
7:56 p.m.: An 11-yard punt for the Nittany Lions. Not the kind of play that wins Big Ten titles.
