It just keeps getting better for the York College men’s soccer team.

The Spartans won their NCAA tournament debut Saturday evening, defeating Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2, in Virginia Beach, Va. York College (18-2-2) is ranked eighth in the nation and has now won a school record 14 straight matches.

The Spartans advance to face either DeSales or Jersey City at 6 p.m. today in Virginia Beach, Va. A win advances them to next weekend’s sectionals.

In Saturday’s win over the Marlins, York College got two goals from Andrew Wheeler — his team-leading 13th and 14th of the season — and another from Scott McDowell. The Spartans led 3-1 before Virginia Wesleyan notched a second goal with about 90 seconds to play.

The Spartans opened the scored 13:57 into the match when sophomore Wheeler beat Marlins goalie Kyle Williams from 15 yards out.

Wheeler then made it 2-0 in the 36th minute with another shot on the run from about 15 yards out.

The Marlins cut into the Spartan lead to 2-1 just 1:29 into the second half as Damien Woodley knocked in a header off a pass from Evan Rodway.

But York College bounced back when senior captain McDowell dribbled through three defenders and beat Williams to make it 3-1. It was the ninth goal of the year for McDowell, a Dallastown grad.
