Derrick Williams still seems determined to play in Penn State’s bowl game, staff writer Frank Bodani reports.
The star freshman receiver broke his left arm during the Michigan game a month ago and has been rehabbing diligently ever since.
“He’s definitely working hard toward it, said Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson. “He was out running (on Tuesday). He has fresh legs, the arm looked great.
Williams’ high school coach Rick Houchens has said he expects Williams to play.
And last week, cornerback Alan Zemaitis hinted at a return, too. “I’m hoping I can get another game with him because the fire he brings to the table is something Penn State needs.
Williams had minor surgery to stabilize the bone in the arm the week after the injury. He was on the sideline during the Wisconsin last week, his sling gone.
The initial medical report from Penn State officials said Williams would need three to four months to recover. Penn State figures to play a bowl game on Jan. 2 or Jan. 3, about 2½ months after the injury.
Williams was the team’s top receiver when he went down with 22 catches for 289 yards and a touchdown. He also had 22 carries for 105 yards and three TDs.
