After scoring a victory over Division I Clarion in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Duals, the York College wrestling team dropped a pair of matches and settled for a fourth-place finish in the eight-team event on Sunday afternoon in State College.
The Spartans beat Clarion, 25-15, in the first round. York College was then flattened by host Penn State in the semifinals, 47-3. In the third-place match, Lock Haven downed the Spartans, 28-11.
“We earned respect today,� said York College coach Tom Kessler. “We beat a strong team from Clarion and wrestled tough against two great teams in Penn State and Lock Haven. This competition will serve us well as the season wears on.�
Against Clarion, York College got wins from Kyle Flickinger (125), Tim Bohlman (141), Garrett Faulkner (157), Duane Bastress (184), Matt Chrzanowski (197) and Luke Panizzi (heavyweight). Faulkner and Chrzanowski had pins, while Bastress recorded a major decision. Meanwhile, the win by Flickinger, a Bermudian Springs graduate, was his first collegiate victory.
Against Penn State, the Spartans gone their lone points from defending Division III national champion Bastress, who earned a 13-7 decision over Nittany Lion Neil Bretz.
Against Lock Haven, York College got its points off major decisions by Bastress and Chrzanowski, and a decision by Panizzi.
The No. 12 Nittany Lions defeated No. 8 Lehigh 18-17 in the finals to win the event. Penn State’s Phil Davis, who had three pins, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.
