What are the Orioles doing?

| | Comments (0)

NEWS ITEM: The Baltimore Orioles signed veteran free agent outfielder Richard Hidalgo to a minor league contract Sunday.

Right now, the Orioles have a roster that looks like it was assembled by a fantasy owner who has no clue what he's doing.

If we are to believe that Ramon Hernandez is the everyday catcher and Jay Gibbons is the starting right fielder, then that leaves the following players to battle for three jobs (left field, first base and designated hitter):

Javy Lopez
Richard Hidalgo
Jeff Conine
Kevin Millar
David Newhan

And that's not to mention the center field battle between Corey Patterson, Luis Matos and Nick Markakis. Will either Matos or Patterson automatically wind up as a little-used reserve?

The Orioles, as usual, simply didn't seem to have a plan for their starting nine this winter, other than "let's sign some guys."
