This year was different.

Most of the players who helped Meredith Cox carry Delone Catholic to three straight PIAA Class AA titles were gone, and the Georgetown-bound senior had to carry the Squirettes on her own.

She managed just fine. After a slow start, Delone rounded into form in time to reach the PIAA semifinals. Cox didn’t win a fourth gold medal, but she did score 2,097 points and was named the best Class AA player in the state for the second straight season.

What was your best moment of the year?

Just the fact that we had 10 losses and got to the Eastern finals was pretty amazing. We had a lot of games we were down and came back. You can pick any of those.

This was the first time in your career Delone didn’t dominate all season. How did you adjust?

When we had a record of 7-7, people were like "What Delone team is this?" I always thought all our losses were real close and to good teams, so they were quality losses. I took it like a challenge: We’re only two points worse than this team, we only need a few more rebounds here.

Many of the players who helped Delone win three state titles graduated last year. How did you change your game this season?

I felt a little more pressure to score this year. I felt like I needed to score each game. I didn’t necessarily take that role before because there were other people who could score and would do other things to help us win games.

Did you just decide you weren’t going to lose to Trinity in the state playoffs?

I didn’t consciously think, "I’m going to take over," but I knew we weren’t going to lose. ... I’m still amazed we won that game.

Sitting courtside, what were you thinking watching York Catholic celebrate its state title?

I was thinking if it wasn’t going to be us, I want it to be them. It would have been great to win it again or play in the game. At first, it was kind of tough. When they were down I was joking that they had to make it a better game than this. But they deserved to win. They have a great team and great coach. They’ll probably win it again next year.

You’re going to Georgetown next year. Have you started on any sort of workout plan?

I think they’re sending me a packet in the mail. I’m going down there for a month this summer so I can work out with the team and take some classes.

What’s the soundtrack of your life?

Hip-hop, rap, Kanye West. I listen to a lot of stuff. That’s a pretty funny question. I’ve never been asked that before.

What’s your favorite TV show?

Right now, probably “Grey’s Anatomy.

Which player in the league did you enjoy competing against the most?

It was exciting when I got to play Meggan Quinn. We didn’t get to play a lot because Red Lion is in Section 1, but the (YAIAA) tournament games were always good.

You had a lot of AAU success. What’s the biggest difference between club ball and high school?

Club ball, you become more of a family. You room with people during the summer, and you’re with them all the time. Every single player on my team is going Division I, and most of them are going to bigger programs than I am. High school is fun, but it’s really different. AAU you can try wild passes, and they will get caught. High school, you have to be more aware of who you are throwing to.

As clubs become more popular, can you see a day when elite players don’t compete for their high schools?

I could see that happening, unfortunately. Playing high school is something you can only enjoy once, but I’ve heard of players that play all year round in fall leagues right up until high school starts. I think it could overlap, especially with elite players because the exposure is uncanny.

What’s something about yourself that would surprise people who watched you play but don’t know you?

My first ever AAU national qualifier I missed because I was at a dog show with my mom ... (Her mom has been raising dogs for Cox’s whole life). I don’t do it anymore.
