Keystone Games news and notes

The Capital Region’s Junior Division baseball team broke out the bats in a 14-5 victory over Great Lakes on Wednesday in the Keystone State Summer Games here in York County.
Eastern York’s Jaron Shimmel was 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored.
Spring Grove’s Kurt Krout was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
Central York’s Brandon Workinger was 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs, all of which came with two outs.
And West York’s Cody Boren was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs.
All four players will be sophomores this fall.
The Capital Region is 2-1 thus far.

Talking about the weather: Even with the late-day showers that strolled through the area, the Keystone Games schedule managed to stay on track Wednesday.
Only two Junior Division baseball games that started after 5 p.m. were in question, but both were played to completion. The only other outdoor sport played on Wednesday was golf, but that was finished long before the rain hit the region.
Keystone Games competition director Bob Parkison said baseball and softball are the two sports that can be affected the most by rain.
Other sports at the Games can usually play through showers, especially field hockey, which is being played on FieldTurf at Central York and Small Athletic Field.
Lightning, however, can stop all sports, causing a rescheduling nightmare. With evening showers and thunderstorms common in July, organizers try to keep some options open when possible.
“It is something always in your mind, Parkison said. “A lot of it depends on how tightly the schedule is packed.
Parkison added that another weather factor is extreme heat, which event doctors carefully keep an eye on.
“We can get a lot of heat and if you try to push (the games) too close, the athletes don’t get enough rest, he said. “In any sport, the medical staff can call a mandatory water break.
Officials will certainly watch the sky over the remaining four days of competition, as isolated thunderstorms are possible each day through Sunday.
