Daily Record/Sunday News staff report

Central York varsity football coach Brad Livingston has been coaching for more than 20 years, but even he doesn’t know what Shippensburg University is facing after the Tuesday’s death of freshman Vince Bernardo.

Bernardo, from Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School, was just 19 minutes into his first drill as a college football player when he developed breathing problems. The 17-year-old died later that morning at Chambersburg Hospital

“There is just no way I can appreciate what they are going through, Livingston said at Thursday’s YAIAA Media Day at South Hills Golf Club in Penn Township “I think any football person anywhere has got to be hurting a little bit.

Livingston plans to find out more details when he gets the chance to speak with recent Central grad Eric Schwartz, who is also a freshman at Shippensburg.

“I plan on calling him sometime next week, Livingston said of Schwartz, the quarterback on last season’s YAIAA Division I champs. “I am sure right now it is a devastating time for everybody. Going to college is so different from high school. It is such a big step up. Eric was prepared for all of the challenges that come with it normally, but I feel so bad for anybody in that program.
