COMMENTARY: By Brad Jennings

After Jeremy Mayfield’s firing Friday, car owner Ray Evernham announced Bill Elliott will drive the No. 19 Dodge whenever his schedule permits, but the 50-year-old Elliott is no long-term solution.

“I need a 25-year-old Bill Elliott, Evernham said.

Me, too. Give me the Coors Ford. Give me Dale Earnhardt in the Wrangler Chevy, and Harry Gant in the Skoal Olds.

While you’re at it, I’ll also take Mark Martin in the Stroh’s Light Ford, and Terry Labonte in the Bud Chevy. And, if it’s not too much trouble, give me Neil Bonnett, Tim Richmond, Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison.
