Timmons knows who to listen to

Daily Record/Sunday News

York’s Knowledge Timmons, a redshirt freshman from William Penn High School, is finally getting his chance to get on the playing field, on Penn State's special teams.

Things are better now that he appears to have some academic problems worked out.

Timmons said he fared well in the classroom last fall, with a 2.9 grade-point average. But that slipped to 2.1 in the spring while running track and attending to football concerns.

Track is on hold, for now.

“I think I was putting too much on myself, and I was worried about too many other things, he said. “I was trying to do too much. Since I didn’t have success in football I was trying to have success in track.

Coach Joe Paterno didn’t approve of the grades slip.

As for the 2.1 GPA?

“That’s not cutting it for my aunt, Timmons said about York’s Joan Flowers, the woman he lived with during his senior year of high school. “She told me when she saw my grades, ‘You’re not doing track. I don’t care if Joe says you can do track, you’re not doing track until your grades get back up.’

Timmons said he took three classes this summer to improve his grade-point average.

So now, in a few weeks, he is expected to be a standout on the kickoff and punt teams. Not as a returner but as a tackler.

“It’s my speed. I’m aggressive and I can tackle and I love to hit people and I love to run into things. People think because you’re small you can’t hit anybody. If that’s my job this year, I’ll do it well. I just want to see the field.
