From staff reports
Mustang returns: Tim Smith will be back at fullback for South Western on Friday night after missing last week’s game with a concussion. Smith’s return means Eric Updegrove can return to his normal halfback position.
But South Western coach Don Seidenstricker still expects a bear of a game at Littlestown.
“Littlestown is a sleeping giant, Seidenstricker said. “That’s an experienced football team and I hope they don’t choose this week to wake up.
The Mustangs are still without original starting halfback Shawn Rider, who will miss at least six more weeks while an ankle he broke in a scrimmage recovers.
Rallying together: Spring Grove shocked a lot of people last week beating Mechanicsburg 16-0, the first game back for seven players — all juniors and seniors — suspended in an alleged Aug. 15 hazing incident.
Rockets’ coach Gregg Trone said his team still has plenty to work on, but was pleased with the result.
“Last week was a team victory and a team effort, Trone said. “That’s what it’s going to take the next eight or nine weeks.
Growing up fast: After last year’s success, it was hard to imagine Susquehannock getting blown out in Week 2. But that’s what happened at The Corral.
“For whatever reason as a whole, we’re pressing too much, Warriors’ coach Tom Waranavage said. “We’re just young in some spots and we need to mature quickly. You can’t mature on Friday nights. Friday nights you just have to go out and play.
Kicking standouts: Kennard-Dale junior Francis Bowman drilled a 47-yard field goal at Littlestown to set a school record. It was the second long 3-pointer of the season as South Western’s Drew Snyder boomed a 51-yarder against Gettysburg on opening night.
