Mike Mussina, who turns 38 in December, has a terrific career resume — if you don’t look too closely.
The pitcher from Montoursville, who made his major-league debut in 1991 with the Orioles, has compiled:
*A career record of 239-134 (.641 winning percentage);
*A career ERA of 3.63;
*Five All-Star appearances;
*Six top-five finishes in the AL Cy Young voting;
*And eight trips to the postseason in 16 seasons.
But look closer: He has never won 20 games in a season. He has never won a Cy Young Award. He has never won a World Series.
Mussina is a very, very good pitcher. He might make the Hall of Fame.
But quick, name the defining victory of his career.
It’s a shame, but it’s really looking like Mike Mussina’s career will be remembered as one big “near miss.

Did you ever stop to think that Mike Mussina, as well as all professional athletes, have lives, families, children, wives, mothers and feelings. Mike Mussina's son is in my daughter's class, and he's a great kid! Are you aware of all of the money Mike Mussina puts back into our community? How many scholarships are awarded in his name to high school students in Lycoming County? I think your comments are really shallow and ignorant! Did you ever stop to think that maybe . . . " a . he isn't playing baseball just to make a name for himself? Maybe he enjoys it. And believe me, Chris Otto, you just made it in my book as an arrogant and ignorant jerk. You need to think about the things you write about people. Why did you bother to say anything? What are your stats? What is your big career highlight? Are you proud of yourself? What things would you like people to say about you? Do you make a habit of putting other people down so you feel good about yourself? I'd say your career is "one big joke.". .
