It appears as if the Penn State defense won’t have to worry about Michigan’s Mario Manningham, the Big Ten’s leading receiver, on Saturday.

He likely will be scratched because of a knee injury, according to a report in The Detroit News.

Manningham was injured in last Saturday’s victory over Michigan State. He should be replaced by junior Adrian Arrington and freshman Greg Mathews — who have a combined 14 catches and three touchdowns.

Manningham is averaging 87.8 receiving yards per game and 22 yards per catch. He has nine touchdowns among his 24 receptions.

PEP RALLY: Penn State will hold a pep rally at 8:30 p.m. on Friday in Rec Hall in anticipation of the Michigan game the following night.

Highlights of the “Rally in the Valley include appearances by head coach Joe Paterno, the Nittany Lion football team, the Penn State cheerleaders, the Lionettes dance team, the Blue Band and the Nittany Lion mascot.

Also, a student “Whiteout has been declared for Saturday game (8 p.m.) in Beaver Stadium. All fans are encouraged to wear white.

The game will be nationally televised by ABC.

THE ILLINOIS GAME: Penn State’s homecoming game against Illinois on Oct. 21 will begin at noon in Beaver Stadium and will be televised by ESPN2. The Nittany Lions are 35-5 all-time in homecoming games under Joe Paterno.
