All week, and really the last two weeks, people in two counties have gone on and on about the South Western-New Oxford game.
It should be a great contest, but don't think it settles the Division I race.
William Penn has quietly won three games since Harrisburg, perhaps the best team in the state, stormed through York. The Bearcats, a mixture of talented seniors and learn-as-they-go sophomores, want to, at the very least, create a tri-champions squabble.
“A lot of our young kids are starting to play better now that they’ve had some experience, William Penn coach Matt Ortega said. “They’re playing very hungry.
The Bearcats play Red Lion this week in a game both teams need to win to keep their District 3 playoff hopes alive.
William Penn currently sits 15th in the Class AAAA rankings with Red Lion tied for 16th. Sixteen teams advance in the expanded format, but nobody wants to play top-seeded Harrisburg.
In Class AAA, New Oxford is fourth, South Western is sixth and Susquehannock eighth. All three teams look relatively secure in the 16 team format. West York and York Suburban, both with 4-3 records, are slugging it out at 14th and 15th.
In Class AA, Bermudian Springs is sixth and Littlestown eighth, with eight teams advancing.
Hanover vaulted to seventh place in Class A two weeks ago by beating York County Tech and collecting 60 Class AAAA points. The 2-5 Nighthawks could be in with another victory.
