Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer, a former offensive lineman for the Volunteers, played against a Joe Paterno-coached Penn State team in 1971. He also coached against Paterno as an assistant in a 1992 bowl game and as the head coach in a 1994 bowl game.
Fulmer’s 1971 team defeated Penn State, 31-11, in Knoxville.
The two also have been on Nike-sponsored coaching trips together.
“I’ve watched his wife beat his backside playing tennis once or twice,� Paterno said with a laugh.
