Joe Paterno cracked up the room on Thursday in Tampa, Fla., as he finished discussing life as a head coach amid the scrutiny of talk radio and ESPN, amid the growing expectations of athletic departments, university boosters and fans.

“I’ve been fortunate at Penn State,� Paterno said with a smile. “I’ve outlived most of the boosters. I’ve buried most of the pains-in-the-rear-ends.�

And, “I hope to,� chimed in the University of Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer, who’s been a head coach for 14 years.
