A new recruit picks Penn State

| | Comments (0)

Penn State picked up a somewhat surprising football recruit on Wednesday, the 20th of its class -- but is still waiting on the word of two others.

The Nittany Lions’ late interest was enough to gain a commitment from Edinboro’s Drew Astorino, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound, do-everything type who projects as a college defensive back.

Astorino broke a verbal commitment to Kent State and passed up a recent scholarship offer from Iowa in picking Penn State.

He led General McLane High to a Class AAA state title last fall while earning player of the year honors in Pennsylvania. He also will play in the Big 33 Classic.

The Lions are still pursuing two recruits for its class -- Virginia defensive end Chimaeze Okoli and Arkansas running back Broderick Green.

Okoli is a "sleeper" pick, unnoticed by most school and recruiting experts until recently. He has received scholarship offers, though, from Virginia Tech and Penn State, among others.

Green is a superstar tailback, a big, powerful runner who already weighs 230 pounds. He expects to decide between USC, Penn State and Ohio State early next week.
