No gimmes for Sosa

| | Comments (0)

Earlier this week, Sammy Sosa signed a contract with the Texas Rangers.

We haven’t seen his face since he bombed out of Baltimore in 2005 — hitting 14 homers in 102 games. It was a monumental collapse for a slugger who had just years earlier clubbed 60 home runs with relative ease.

Sosa’s also responsible for one of my favorite mementos. It’s the Orioles official “Sammy Sosa Home Run Packet. It’s entitled “The Road to 600.

It’s buried in my desk — somewhere. I kept it as a joke.

Sammy Sosa’s career stalled at 588— until recently.

Just a reminder: There are no gimmes in sports, even when it comes to muscle-bound sluggers.

Just ask Mark McGwire how that Hall of Fame speech is coming along.
