STATE COLLEGE (AP) — Coquese Washington will become the next women’s basketball coach at Penn State, an employee with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press today.

Washington, an associate head coach at Notre Dame, replaces Rene Portland, who resigned last month after a 27-year tenure.

The Penn State staffer spoke on condition of anonymity because the school had scheduled a news conference todayo officially announce Washington’s hiring. The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported Washington’s hiring.

Penn State women’s basketball spokeswoman Kris Peterson would not confirm the report, but said the news conference would “address the women’s coaching situation.”

Portland’s success on the court was tarnished by allegations of discrimination. In March, she and the university settled a lawsuit by a former player who claimed Portland had a “no-lesbian” policy.

Washington has been a key assistant to Notre Dame coach Muffett McGraw. She played for the Irish from 1989-93 and began coaching there since 1999 after playing in the WNBA.
