Nittany Lions miss out on running back

Smithfield (Va.) High School running back Dyrell Roberts made a verbal commitment earlier today to play football at Virginia Tech, The Virginian-Pilot reported on its Web site.

Although he rushed for 1,166 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, Roberts was recruited by Virginia Tech as a wide receiver.

“Penn State liked him as a tailback,“ Smithfield coach Chris Frasier told The Virginian-Pilot. “But I just think he’s a prototypical receiver. He’s got really good speed, great hands, and he’s physical. He’s at running back for us because we have limitations at quarterback, and in our league, you get the ball in the hands of your best athlete.“

Along with the Hokies, Virginia and Penn State, Roberts also had scholarship offers from North Carolina and N.C. State.

Penn State received a verbal commitment Sunday from Youngstown, Ohio, running back Brandon Beachum and is still awaiting the decisions of two other prep stars — Ohio running back Michael Shaw and Michigan offensive tackle Deon’tae Pannell.
