MMA mystery in Egg Harbor

| | Comments (0)

Well, it was probably the easiest bout of the night — and the shortest by far.

Biff Walizer walked in to the cage at the Cage of Vengeance show in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, on Saturday and was declared the winner.

As to what happened to his opponent — Bryan Danner — remains a mystery.

“He was there, he weighed in ... he shook my hand after I weighed in,” Walizer said Wednesday.

But when the time came for the fight, just like Elvis, Danner had left the building.

“I don’t know what happened to him,” Walizer said. “It was bizarre.”

But Walizer’s MMA jinx didn’t end there. On Monday, he got a call from the promoter of the New Breed Fighters show at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ, where he is to fight this Friday. Guess what? Walizer’s opponent backed out.

The next day, the promoter called him back, and said he had found a replacement fighter. But Walizer isn’t exactly convinced.

“Who knows? I’m ready to fight,” he said.

Walizer, 31, of Windsor Township, had hoped to get as many amateur fights under his belt as possible before entering the professional ranks on Sept. 7 with the eight-man Beasts of the Northeast Tournament in Atlantic City, NJ.

Undaunted, Walizer has continued to train with several MMA camps in York County. Since wrestling is his foundation, he has tried to work in as much stand-up as possible, he said.

“I would say I’m still at the novice level as far as the striking goes,” he said. His game plan is to throw some combos, move in for a clinch and take it to the ground.
