From golf correspondent Al Gregson...
Baltimore-area favorite and University of Maryland graduate Fred Funk has committed to play in the 2007 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship, the last of the five majors on the Champions Tour and the first to be played at historic Baltimore Country Club.
Another area favorite, Jim Thorpe, who graduated from Morgan State in Baltimore, is also in the field. Thorpe won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup tournament in 2006, giving him at least one win and $1 million in the last seven campaigns on the Champions Tour.
Thorpe’s commitment sets up a possible repeat of last year’s Senior Players Championship in Dearborn, Mich., when he finished second to Bobby Wadkins, who will be on hand in Baltimore to defend his title Oct. 1-7.
Other notables in the field include Tom Watson and Bernhard Langer, both members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, plus Craig Stadler, Jay Haas, Scott Hoch and Jeff Sluman.
