STATE COLLEGE — Former Penn State women’s basketball coach Rene Portland is cleaning house — likely in preparation for a move. A yard sale at her Patton Township home on Friday was rife with Lady Lions paraphernalia and athletic goods.
Piles of T-shirts promoting “Rene’s Dunkers” sat on one table next to a Portland bobblehead doll. Nearby was a stool emblazoned with Lady Lions imagery, and there was at least one item touting Big Ten women’s basketball.
Portland, 54, has largely dropped off the radar since resigning in March.
She worked 27 seasons as the Lady Lions’ head coach, but was dogged throughout her career by allegations that she discriminated against lesbian players. Former player Jennifer Harris filed federal bias claims against Portland in 2005, a case that ended in a confidential settlement earlier this year.
Portland did not appear to be at the yard sale. Her husband said he could not comment to the press.
A local real estate agency on Friday listed the Portlands’ four-bedroom, three-bathroom home as being for sale for $295,000.
