Nittany Lions get commitment from tight end

Penn State fans will remember the name — and maybe the oversized body, too.

Staff writer Frank Bodani reports that the most recent high school football recruit to commit to the Nittany Lions is Philadelphia tight end Mark Wedderburn — the younger brother of former massive Lion lineman Floyd Wedderburn.

Older brother made a name for himself in the mid-1990s as a 300-pound-plus offensive tackle who went on to an NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks.

Younger brother Mark is a 6-foot-6, 235-pound tight end who has the body frame to add substantial weight and possibly grow into an offensive lineman.

“He’s got huge hands and can catch the ball and run pretty well. ... I think he’s a real good catch,” said Tom Lemming, a national recruiting expert based near Chicago. “He looks thin for his weight right now because he carries his weight so well.”

Wedderburn passed up scholarship offers from Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, West Virginia and Louisville to pick Penn State. He is the 12th verbal commitment of the Lions’ recruiting class.
