Albright athletes

Reading’s Albright College has become home to several former YAIAA athletes in as many as eight different sports.

Starting with field hockey, where former South Western teammates Kayla Waldrup and Kelly Zepp are together again.

Zepp started all 18 games this past fall for the Lions. The sophomore tied for the team lead in points with 18, behind her six goals and six assists. She also had 22 shots on goal and a game-winning goal this past season.

Waldrup, another sophomore got into 13 games and put seven of her eight shots on goal for a solid .875 shot percentage for the 7-11 team.

Also listed on an Albright fall sports roster was Kennard-Dale grads Josh Hare and Justin Lane, along with the New Oxford duo of Eddie Mitchem and Scott O’Brien, on the Lions’ football squad.

Mitchem, a 5-11, 275-pound freshman, played in nine games on the defensive line, recording three tackles, one solo.

Hare also posted stats over his three games as he had two tackles – one solo – in three games played. The freshman intercepted a pass as well for the team, which finished 7-4.

Although listed on the 2007 roster, no statistics were shown for Lane and O’Brien.

The fall also featured Kyra Schirk was a member of the cross country team this past fall. The junior is Red Lion alum.

New Oxford grad Missy Yake was on the tennis team and competed in some doubles matches this past fall season.

Currently, David Kyle, a Spring Grove alum, is a contributing member on the Lions’ swimming team. The senior is a consistent scorer in the backstroke and as a member of the medley relay team.

Spring of 2008, will see Dover alum Kristen Landis play her junior season on the Albright softball team. The outfielder appeared in 10 games last season.

Delone Catholic’s Casey Lawrence will try to crack the Lion baseball lineup, and is listed as a pitcher/infielder for his upcoming freshman season.

One liners: Finally the Johan Santana saga is complete after Minnesota dealt the ace-lefty to the New York Mets, but the funny thing is the Twins did not receive a Major League ready everyday player in return for the baseball’s win leader over the past four seasons. Can you say cheap?
