In her final fall semester, Kelly Downs has made Elizabethtown College proud both on and off the volleyball court.
The 2004 Red Lion grad set an Etown record for kills in a season with 511 (an average of 3.79 per game), and became the Blue Jays career leader in kills with 1,532 and blocks (585) as the team won the Commonwealth Conference title.
Downs finished her playing career being named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and was named to the all-conference team for the fourth time after leading the league in kills, hitting percentage (.378) and blocks (181).
The American Volleyball Coaches’ Association named her an honorable mention on its all-American team and the all-Mid Atlantic Region team.
But, it is not just there that the occupational therapy major excels.
Downs finished the fall term with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and was recognized by the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation as a Scholar Athlete award winner for volleyball.
She was is also the 2007 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-American of the Year, the first Elizabethtown student-athlete to earn such a distinction.
One liners: It is amazing the New York Giants will play in the upcoming Super Bowl, especially considering that top offensive weapon of the past several years Tiki Barber retired, in addition to the fact that many fans and media alike questioned how effective quarterback Eli Manning would ever be.
