Rickey Schmelyun is off to a good start in his second season of college wrestling.
The Bermudian Springs graduate is 20-12 so far this season at 165 pounds for Division I Bloomsburg University.
Schmelyun, ranks second in the PSAC in pins with six, behind Huskies’ teammate Mike Spaid, who has 15 at heavyweight. He is also ranked in majority decisions with five and is second at 165 with his .625 winning percentage.
The sophomore won his first six matches of the season, before dropping a 2-0 decision to Zachary Shanaman of Penn. Still, he has defeated wrestlers from large schools like Pitt, Rutgers, Drexel and the Naval Academy.
Althoug he lost a tight 8-7 decision to Clarion's David Cox in the PSAC championship match, Schmelyun has improved from the very respectable 29-15 mark he posted in his freshman season.
It is a long way from East Berlin, although Schmelyun entered Bloomsburg accustomed to top-level competition after winning the PIAA Class AA championship at 140 pounds as a senior after placing third at 130 the previous year.
Of course, Schmelyun came on the scene just fine for the Huskies, posted a 29-15 match record one year ago as a freshman.
One liners: Enough about how Tony Romo’s romantic mini-vacation with Jessica Simpson may have affected the Dallas quarterback’s play during the Cowboys’ NFC playoff loss to the Giants. It sure wasn’t Romo – or Simpson – that dropped several key passes, committed way too many penalties or was physically beaten in the fourth quarter.
