On January 17, Spring Grove graduate Laura Harkins surpassed the 1,000-career point mark for Shepherd University during the Rams 75-47 win over West Liberty State.
The senior’s layup with 4:20 remaining in the game made her the 12th player in Shepherd history to top 1,000.
Harkins scored 16 points, had seven rebounds and two blocked shots in the contest.
Two days after reaching the milestone, Harkins poured in 19 more to go along with 13 rebounds leading Sheppard to its sixth straight win, 72-69 over West Virginia State.
She also posted five assists, four blocks and two steals in the game for the 9-4 Rams, who avenged an earlier loss to WVS.
For the season, Harkins, who was named to the all-WVIAC second team after her junior season third on the team in scoring, averaging a little more than 10 points and five rebounds per game.
She leads the team with 20 blocked shots, while shooting almost 52 percent from the field and holds 76 percent from the free throw line.
Former Littlestown star Katie Warehime is also playing at Shepherd and is out-doing her fellow YAIAA player, leading the team in scoring with 16.7 points and rebounds (6.3) per game.
She is shooting above the 55-percent plateau from the floor and nearly 77 percent from the charity stripe.
The 6-foot-1 Warehime has led the Rams in points four times this season, scoring 24 on December 6 against Cheney and December 19 against Columbia Union, both Shepherd victories.
One liners: Talk about youngsters stepping up, a trio of freshmen have been playing great in the YAIAA so far this season. The Eastern York duo of Austin Tillotson and Andrew Nicholas have been stellar playing at the boys' varsity level, but York Catholic’s Kady Schrann has become the do-all for the Irish girls, leading the way in scoring while playing terrific defense shutting down the opposition’s top players.
