Lineup Card readers:
Today I am introducing a new facet of the The Lineup Card, with a revised College Spotlight.
The goal of this portion of the blog will be to help our readers keep in touch with our local athletes and at their college and professional careers – in and out of the world of sports.
I would like to begin by saying that reader responses and comments will be greatly appreciated. Plus, if you know of someone who should be spotlighted, please let us know in the comments section, or by emailing snavaroli@ydr.com.
So, let’s begin the series with a report on a YAIAA alum who got his first NFL start on Sunday, Dec. 30. Dover High School grad John Kuhn lined up at fullback for Green Bay, which kept momentum for the up-coming playoffs by smoking Detroit, 34-13.
With his main job being as a blocking block for Pack leading rusher Ryan Grant, who managed 57 yards on just six carries, and backup tailback Brandon Jackson, who posted 113 yards on 20 carries, Kuhn did not carry the ball, but did catch one pass for five yards.
The former Dover standout had two receptions for seven yards in his first season with the Packers after spending two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
With the Steelers in 2006, Kuhn appeared in nine games, rushing twice for a total of 18 yards – a solid nine yards per carry. He also caught one pass for 15 yards. He was on the practice squad and dressed for a couple of games in 2005, but recorded no stats.
Kuhn has a career total of nine tackles, six solo, on special teams.
After graduating in 2000 with 2,242 career-rushing yards at Dover, Kuhn went on to star at Shippensburg University, where he scored 53 touchdowns while rushing for 4,685 yards. He set 26 Red Raider and six PSAC records during an outstanding collegiate career.
One liners: Maybe I am old school, or just old, but the lack of class displayed by showboating, flipping into the end zone and logo stomping by big-time college football players in this weekend’s bowl games was disgusting.
