Although small of stature, Savannah Ruth has been anything small for the Gettysburg College field hockey team.
The New Oxford grad is listed at 4-foot-10, but managed to lead the team in most offensive categories this past fall.
Ruth, who started all 18 games for the 11-7 Bullets, scored 11 goals and added nine assists – both of which were team highs, along with her 31 points.
The junior also led the team with 53 shots and regardless of her size, her success comes at no surprise to her high school coach Cheryl Mowery.
“She worked very had at the high school level,” Mowery said. “She is a dedicated athlete. She is very strong. With her work ethic her skills are at a higher level.”
Vanessa Pabon, another former Colonial also started every game for Gettysburg this season.
The sophomore had a solid season on the Bullets’ backline, posting a goal, two assists and 16 shots on goal.
“Vanessa is another athlete that spends a lot of time running, training and lifting,” Mowery added. “Both have traveled to play with different club teams and practice their hockey.”
The pair weren't the only former YAIAA standouts to play for Gettysburg this season as 2007 South Western alum Casey Bialek appeared in seven contests during her freshman season, playing defense and recording one shot for the Bullets.
One liners: If told only one Manning would survive this past weekend’s NFL playoffs, would anyone really have guessed it would be Eli and not Peyton?
