West Chester has a local feel

On Saturday, the West Chester University women’s basketball team has a York flavor with two YAIAA grads in the Golden Rams’ starting lineup.

York Catholic grad Megan Stewart and Dallastown’s Lindsay Weller began the game and Stewart played a team-high 38 minutes, scoring 10 points, while Weller added four in 21 minutes during West Chester’s 67-54 win over East Stroudsburg.

Stewart, a 1,000-point scorer in high school and one of the catalysts in the Irish’ back-to-back PIAA titles, was 2-of-4 from 3-point range and pulled down five rebounds.

The freshman has started six of the Rams 17 games and averages 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds. The 5-foot-4 guard is also shooting 50 percent (15-30) from beyond the arc and 85.2 percent (23-27) from the free throw line. She is also second on the team in assists with 44.

Weller, a junior, started 12 games, averaging 16.2 minutes and 2.6 points this season.

Last season at West Chester, the 5-6 medicine major started 25 games and scored 4.8 per contest.

In 2005, Weller was the YAIAA Division I Player of the Year in both basketball and soccer and leading Dallastown to the state quarterfinals in both sports.

Athletes of the week galore: Within the last two weeks, the YAIAA has posted various conference athletes of the week, beginning with Stewart claiming PSAC-East Rookie of the Week honors.

Also, Spring Grove’s Laura Harkins was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference co-Player of the Week after surpassing the 1,000 career-point mark.

At Shippensburg, Lauren Beckley continues her amazing run and recently earned her fifth PSAC-West Player of the Week award.

Locally, Dallastown grad Chad McGowan was honored with the same award for the Capital Athletic Conference behind a 23-point performance during a win at Hood College that put the Spartans in a first place tie in the CAC.

One liners: The Orioles were closing in a deal that would ship ace pitcher Eric Bedard to Seattle for several top prospects, although it is speculated that Birds owner Peter Angelos is trying to nix the deal. His involvement can’t be a good sign for Baltimore considering how well Angelos usually judges talent.
