He is one of more than a dozen YAIAA alumni playing sports at Juniata. The list also includes Kyle Saxman (York Suburban, baseball), Matt Schmidt (South Western, football), Dan Kraft (Eastern York, football).
In the fall, South Western grad Bryan Hess led the Eagles men’s soccer team with seven goals and one assists for a team-high 15 points. The junior is joined by Dallastown’s Brandon Grim, who had four goals and Chad Kohr of Northeastern.
Boys volleyball players include Zack Bock (Northeastern), Greg Russell (York Suburban), along with Spring Grove alum, freshmen Josh Mummert and Nick Bortner.
Mindy Werner from West York High School plays 22.6 minutes per game and averages 2.7 points playing for the women basketball team.
Lindsay Norton (Susquehannock) notched the team's fifth best cross country time and Red Lion grade Leslie Stern scored seven goals and added six assists for the Eagles’ 21-3 field hockey team this fall.
Sport shorts: A near-tragedy took place in Buffalo on Sunday when Florida Panthers’ forward Richard Zednik had his carotid artery severed when teammate Olli Jokinen flipped and his skate caught Zednik in the neck. Possible life saving surgery was performed at Buffalo General Hospital after some alert treatment by Sabres orthopedic surgeon Les Bisson and the medical staff on hand at the arena.
The injury happened in the same city that former Buffalo goalie Clint Malarchuk nearly died after having his jugular vein cut by a skate blade. Still, with the nature of collisions in hockey, intentional and non-intentional it is probably a miracle this type of injury hasn’t happened more often.
From this hockey nut: Best wishes for a speedy recovery Richard.
