The University of Pittsburgh’s Cookie McIntyre had a successful Friday in day three of the Big East swimming and diving championships at the Nassau Aquatic Center.
Behind a season-best 1:04.18 in the 100-yard breaststroke, the freshman finished in fourth place after advancing to the finals as the seventh seed.
The versatile McIntyre was a two-time Daily Record Sunday News girl’s swimmer of the year after her junior and senior seasons at West York.
As a senior with the Bulldogs, McIntyre won a state championship gold medal with her performance in the Class AA 100 fly in March of 2007.
She was also a part of the Panthers’ 400-yard medley relay team that swam a 3:46.79 for a fifth place finish. On Wednesday McIntyre was a member of the fifth place 200 medley relay team.
The Panthers women’s team, which ended Thursday in fourth place in the team competition looks like a District 3 all-star team.
Dallastown grad Zane McLain competed for Pitt at Thursday’s Big East diving championships and scored a 240.15, good for 15th place in the preliminaries.
Unfortunately, only the top-8 continued on to the medal round, but the freshman McLain is making his mark on the Panthers’ board.
Sport shorts: Indiana removed Kelvin Samson as its basketball coach after an NCAA report charging Sampson with five major NCAA rules violations came to light.
Dan Dakich replaced Samson on the sidelines for the 15th ranked Hoosiers, but it appears more trouble is brewing after six players skipped the new coach’s first practice.
This looks to be a real mess.
