This little tidbit came from a swimming official at Friday night’s YAIAA championship meet.
Little is in name only, because indeed Joe D’Orsie has been pretty impressive at Division I Duquesne University.
The Dallastown grad is on the Dukes wrestling and football teams, which is extremely rare at a D-I school.
This winter the senior is 5-5 wrestling in the heavyweight class, sharing time with freshman Matt Richardson.
D’Orsie was 7-19, with three pins, in 2006-07 and placed third in the 2006 East Regional after not wrestling the previous year.
On the gridiron, the 250-pound D’Orsie appeared in nine games as a fullback, although his job was as a blocker. He did catch two passes for 16 yards this fall.
In 2006-07, he played in all 10 games, starting five. His lone run of the season was for three yards, although he did recover a teammate’s fumble for a touchdown in Duquesne’s win over Marist.
Although the stats might not attract a lot of attention, D’Orsie is on the Dean’s List, as well as the Director of Athletics’ Honor Roll.
The funny thing is on the Duquesne Web site each sport lists his major differently, so he is either a communication studies major, or public relation/advertising major.
.
Either way, he is doing great, and it is easy to see why the YAIAA referee, also known as his mom, has plenty to be proud of.
Sport shorts: The blockbuster NBA trade involving perennial all-star Jason Kidd was nixed when Devon George refused to wave his no-trade clause to move from Dallas to New Jersey.
Suddenly, George isn’t very popular with Dallas fans, which were hoping to have Kidd return and finish his career with the Mavericks.
Him blocking the deal is one thing, but I can help but wonder who it was that gave George – a middle of the road, at best player – a contract that even included a no trade clause to begin with.
