Freshmen raising eyebrows

Larry Fisher didn’t expect to get a phone call on Tuesday. Then again, Auburn didn’t expect to find two freshmen with tremendous upside when they attended Saturday’s Susquehanna-Eastern York contest.

The Tigers were looking at a Susquehanna player and Eastern freshman Austin Tillotson and Andrew Nicholas, who were featured in this story from today’s print edition, caught Auburn’s eye. Three days later, Eastern coach Larry Fisher got a call from assistant coach Dave Lebo, who is head coach Jeff Lebo’s father and holds the official title of “senior assistant to the head coach.”

“It was pretty fun to have that conversation,” Fisher said. “The first thing I said was: ‘Listen coach, when I talk to you guys, it’s at a conference and I’m asking for your autograph. It’s not about my players.’”

Nicholas seems to have the biggest upside of the two, standing 6-foot-6 with speed and a jump shot that is becoming more accurate by the day, but the savvy 6-foot point guard Tillotson also caught Lebo’s eye. Fisher said the conversation lasted for 45 minutes.

“It’s exciting,” Fisher said. “It means that they’re good players and people are recognizing that. But what it means in the long term, I don’t know. I just know it means they are good players right now and other people are convinced they are going to be very good.”

Soon enough, Fisher’s phone could be ringing off the hook.

“I have a feeling we’re going to be hearing from lots of people,” the coach said with a smile.
