The YAIAA was well represented when the York College wrestling team traveled to New York City and faced Hunter College.
Even without all-American Kyle Flickinger (Bermudian Springs) the Spartans romped 38-6 over the host Hawks.
Red Lion grad Jerrid Hartman got it started, albeit by a medical forfeit at 125 pounds and Sean Hightman, of Northeastern followed by winning 6-1 at 133.
Later at 165 pounds, South Western alum Brian Alwine won a tough 8-6 decision, which gave York an insurmountable 20-3 lead
Other former YAIAA grapplers listed on the Spartans’ roster include Shane Cooley, a heavyweight from Eastern York, Brian Lippy, a Hanover grad (149) and West York’s Mathias Smyser (141).
York is ranked 24th in the nation and will compete in its final match or the regular season Friday at Kutztown, with the Metro Conference championships the following weekend.
Sport shorts: It is interesting that the Orioles are putting in a $5.2 million scoreboard in centerfield of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It is doubtful a new scoreboard that will display Baltimore on the losing side of many games in 2008 will alter the club’s declining attendance rates. Of course maybe the old scoreboards burned out from so much work the night that Texas put up 30 runs against the Birds last season.
