Student-Athletes rule at E-Town

| | Comments (0)

For this edition of the college spotlight, I have decided to go off the field or court.
Out of the arena and stadium.

Why?

Because I can.

And because, there are some local student-athletes exceeding in that role with their performance in the classroom.

One look across the river at Elizabethtown College tells us that two former YAIAA standout athletes are great outside of their sports as well.

Red Lion graduate Kelly Downs was named one of just 58 recipients of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship for fall athletes.

The occupational therapy major has a perfect 4.0 grade point average and after the fall season was named Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year in volleyball, as she led the conference in several categories and broke Blue Jays records along the way.

Elizabethtown softball player Abbie Merrifield has been accepted to medical school, which she will begin in August of this year after her upcoming senior season.

The Dallastown grad started all 30 games for the Blue Jays last season and has been named a team captain for this season, which begins in early March.

Outstanding job, ladies.

Expect more updates like this.

Sport shorts: Although not the most popular of sports, the NHL trade deadline provides many hockey fans with plenty of excitement.
The Washington Capitals, sellers annually for several years, were buyers on Tuesday and they, along with Pittsburgh, who made maybe the biggest acquisition in forward Marion Hossa, should make the Eastern Conference very interesting down the stretch.
