YAIAA's Flying Dutchmen

| | Comments (0)

Several past YAIAA athletes have continued their basketball careers at Lebanon Valley College.

On the men’s team is York Suburban grad Peter Ruth, Delone Catholic’s Matt Staub and Grant Becker of Red Lion.

Ruth, a senior, has started 18 of the Flying Dutchmen’s 24 games. The 6-foot-8 forward is averaging 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. The former Trojan is second on the team in boards, blocked shots and field goals.

Becker has started seven games as a freshman and scores 3.8 points, playing nearly 17 minutes per game. He is also 4-for-9 from 3-point range in 14 games this season.

Staub, a sophomore guard, has appeared in 21 games with eight starts and scores 4.1 per game. He is in the team’s top-5 in assists and steals.

With one regular season game to play before the Commonwealth Conference tournament, the LVC men are 10-14 overall.

A trio of freshmen from the YAIAA graces the women’s team at Lebanon Valley in Shelly Lobach of South Western, Mindy Bennett from Red Lion and Susquehannock’s Andrea Hoover.

The women’s team is 20-4 this season and Bennett has started 23 of those games. The forward averages more than six points and nearly four boards per game. She is shooting .417 from the field and is second on the team in blocked shots.

Hoover is second on the team with her .820 free throw percentage and has 7.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game with 17 starts, while shooting 45 percent from the floor.

Lobach has come off the bench in 21 games, but manages to play a little more than 15 minutes per contest. The ex-Mustang scores 3.6 per game and has 33 steals.

Sport shorts: True that Dallas and Phoenix might have made more high-profile acquisitions by trading for Jason Kidd and Shaquille O’Neal respectively, but as of now it sure looks like the Lakers picking up Pau Gasol might be the coop of the decade.
While Kobe Bryant is still the man, with Gasol’s help Los Angeles leads the Western Conference with a 37-17 record, including winning six and a row and 9-of-10.
Now that is a key addition.
