Crimson Hawks flying with help of local talent

YAIAA and York County baseball are well represented out at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as five players have local ties on the 14-4 Crimson Hawks.

South Western grad Paul Bingham leads the way, hitting .553 in 12 games. The former Mustang is 26-of-47, averaging more than two hits per games played.

The sophomore shortstop has driven in 18 runs and has three doubles and two triples. He is also 4-for-4 in stolen bases and leads the team with a .611 on base percentage.

Dover’s Shane Melhorn, who transferred from Potomac State Junior College, has played in all 18 games, hitting .343 and is tied for the team lead with three home runs. The junior has scored team-high 23 runs and is 3-for-3 in steals.

The center fielder has nine walks and has been hit by four pitches and pitched one inning this season, striking out two of the three hitters he face.

Sophomore Josh Hildebrand of Red Lion has made six appearances and one start on the mound for the Hawks. Although his ERA isn’t great at 5.56, he has fanned 14 batters in a little more than 11 innings pitched.

Also, former Northern York High School twins Colby and Corey Betz have been solid contributors for Indiana.

Corey is hitting .345 with two home runs, playing either second base or DH. On the mound, the sophomore has posted a 1.69 ERA in four relief appearances over five innings and has two saves.

Colby is 2-0 in three starts, has a 3.44 ERA and shutout Virginia State University in the Hawks' season opener. On the season, he has walked just two and struck out 12 in 18 innings.

In 18 games, IUP has scored 173 runs (9.6 per game) and has pounded out 231 hits for a .361 team batting average.

Sport shorts: In one of the more embarrassing moments for this NHL fan, Anaheim Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger received only an eight-game suspension for intentionally stomping on Vancouver’s Ryan Kessler.
Of course, the worst thing might have been the fact that league disciplinarian Colin Campbell wasn’t even going to suspend Pronger, one of the NHL’s dirtiest players, at all until he reviewed another video angle of the incident.
I guess now I will have to be careful about lambasting the NBA for its special star treatment, because after this the NHL is just as bad.
Pronger should have gotten similar punishment to Chris Simon’s 30-game suspension for a similar incident - or at the very least 20-25 games.
