Former Warrior rocks at Rider
Mason Heyne had quite the week for the Rider University baseball team.
The former Susquehannock High School standout had 14 hits, six runs batted in and a home run in five games.
It is easy to see why Heyne was chosen as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week.
To be honest, I can’t fathom what the MAAC Player of the Week must have done.
The third baseman Heyne has played in 35 games and is third on the Broncs (20-16) in hitting with his .348 average and .511 slugging percentage.
He has hit a team-high 13 doubles, has belted three home runs. His 47 hits and 26 RBIs ranked him second on the squad.
Heyne has 14 walks and has struck out only 19 times in 154 plate appearances.
Also on the Rider team is Northern York grad Nate Eppley, a right-handed pitcher who is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in six appearances. Like Heyne, the Dillsburg native Eppley is freshman.
Sport shorts: The NHL playoffs first round came to a close Tuesday night and once again the action — including a pair of Game 7’s — was thrilling to say the least.
However, one thing that is disconcerting is the officiating.
For some reason NHL referees are afraid to make calls in the playoffs, particularly in the third period and overtime.
When will they realize that not calling penalties affects the game more than calling them?
